ST. JOSEPH, MICH. (Oct. 23, 2017) — Hear ye! Hear ye! The City of St. Joseph has decreed that everyone will have fun during its 15th annual public art exhibit, “The Magical Kingdom of St. Joseph,” May 18-Sept. 20. The popular outdoor event held on the city’s downtown sidewalks will feature 15 sculptures depicting knights, dragons and a kid-size castle painted by regional artists.


“We’ve planned a royal good time all summer long for the young, old and middle ages,” said Susan Solon, St. Joseph communications and marketing manager. The Magical Kingdom will be unveiled on May 18 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Maps to the kingdom and each of its sculptures will be available throughout the summer at St. Joseph Today Welcome Center, 301 State St., or online at


“Beginning November 1st, we will be seeking artists and sponsors to participate in the 2018 exhibit,” said Solon. Applications will be available online starting November 1; artists are reminded that a sketch must accompany the completed application. Artists can then submit their application and sketch at or download and email it to The submission deadline is Dec. 15, 2017.


Several area sponsors, including Abonmarche, Pizza Hut, St. Joseph Today and LeRoy’s Body Shop make the event possible.

Project Rules:

- All applications must be received by the City Manager’s Office no later than January 5, 2018.

- If selected you will be notified prior to February 1, 2018.

- All art must be completed and returned no later than April 10, 2018.

- All art will be displayed within the City Limits, with the exception of the New Buffalo Welcome Center, where one is placed in their lobby as part of the marketing program.

- Materials used to finish the art piece must withstand changing weather conditions.

- Material must be safe and durable enough for the public to touch.

- Direct advertising of a product or a company will not be permitted.

- Libelous, slanderous, or designs showing social disrespect will not be permitted.

- All materials/supplies needed to finish the art piece will be acquired at the applicant’s expense.

- The applicant understands the City of St. Joseph is not responsible for any costs associated with decorating the pieces.

- The Marketing Director will handle setting up transport of the art, including delivery and pick up.

- Sponsors and/or artists have first right of refusal in purchasing their art piece at an amount set by the City of St. Joseph. If the sponsor is not interested in purchasing their art, the piece will be sold at auction in late September.
